Spring Walk

Monday, April 4, 2011 - 15:00

Spring Walk 3.00 pm 25 people joined us on Easter Sunday afternoon for a guided walk through the woods, ably led by our expert Caroline Kempster.  Although the unusually warm weather this April had meant that the bluebells were largely past their prime, there were still many flowers and fauna of interest. The party benefitted from some very interesting facts and discussion about the development of the woodland including the past uses of the paths, the folklore linked to the plants and trees and were also informed about their medicinal properties. The weather on the day was perfect. You will be pleased to know that the Oak trees are in full leaf but not as yet the Ash and as Caroline pointed out the saying is Spring Walk 3.00 pm 'Oak before Ash, we're in for a splash; Ash before Oak, we're in for a soak' - we'll see!  Even our commemorative maple was out in full leaf in the arboretum for all to enjoy. The walk was followed by welcome refreshments at the barbecue site and as a special treat, there was a free raffle to win our East Bunny and Easter eggs were handed out to all present. Everyone agreed it was a very pleasant way to spend the afternoon.
