This years AGM will take place on 18th July 2017 at Horntye,Bohemia commencing at 19.30. Members and all those with an interest in St Helen's Woods are invited. Light refreshments will be available and car parking is free. 

Summer Fayre 2017

The 2017 Summer Fayre will take place on Saturday 10th June 2017.

The St Helen's Park Summer Fayre is the premier event in the area. It is a free event suitable for all the family including your dog(s). We have numerous stalls including home made cakes, plants, bric a brac etc. We have a children's entertainer,games and numerous other presentations including wildlife (bats) and spinning. 

We would be very grateful if previous helpers would volunteer again and of course we welcome approaches from newcomers.

Summer fair Once again, we will be holding our annual summer fayre in the woods and we will be keeping our fingers crossed for a sunny day. As usual, there will be plenty of fun for everyone including a variety of stalls, games, music and other entertainments. Don't miss it - pop the date in your diary now and then watch this space for further details to follow shortly. All proceeds go toward the maintenance and protection of the woods.

Halloween party in the woods

Halloween party in the woods Back by popular demand, we are once again holding a Halloween party at the BBQ site. So you know the drill now: brush on those cobwebs, get out your ghouls and wizards, wake up your witches to join us for some spooky fun. The BBQ site will be transformed into a gory ghetto for this family-orientated party. Appropriate appearance is compulsory.

Autumn Walk

Autumn Walk Venture down some new paths, or simply see paths you know in a new light, all under the guidance of our volunteer expert, Caroline Kempster. She will point out to you many interesting facts about the nature of the woods and its inhabitants as you meander, concentrating on those features of most interest to you whether they are your favourite trees, birds or animals.

Annual BBQ Don't risk burning your own fingers! Instead, come and join us at our annual BBQ. As well as scrumptious BBQ food, other pleasures will include a licensed bar for beer and wine as well as soft drinks to wash it all down; a hearty fire to keep you warm; and free musical entertainment. The fun starts at 7.30 p.m. at the BBQ site, which is accessed via the Langham Road entrance.

Summer fair It was unfortunate that the dancers were unable to attend for this year's Summer Fair but we had a number of new games to excite and entertain our visitors as well as old favourites such as the tractor rides and all these proved to be very popular indeed. The standard of the cakes and refreshments available was very high indeed and the quality of the fancy goods, raffle and tombola was impressive.

Spring walk Then followed the Spring Walk ably led by Caroline Kempster. Even though the flora and fauna is somewhat behind this year due to inclement weather, she was still able to point out various interesting facts as we went along. One of these was the memorial plaque to Grey Owl.

Build a bird or bat box

Build a bird or bat box Combined Build a Bird/Bat Box and Spring Walk Following the postponement of the Box Building event scheduled for Feb 10th, it was decided to combine that and the Spring Walk into one joint event. It was a very pleasant Sunday afternoon and this enticed several families into the woods and who joined us for the bird/bat box making experience.

Xmas/New Year lunch party

Xmas/New Year lunch party Once again this was a very pleasurable way to spend a Saturday lunchtime with friends to celebrate the start of another year. A super party atmosphere prevailed, accompanied by good food and light entertainment from quizzes over lunch followed by music from Stephen Page. A very good time was had by all and grateful thanks were expressed to the ladies of the events committee who kindly provided a wonderful lunch.

Halloween party in the woods This was the first time we had held a Halloween party in St Helens Woods and so we did not really know what to expect. We decorated the BBQ site, made the soup, cakes and other goodies and waited to see what happened. The moon came out casting a spooky light on the site. Suddenly, from out of nowhere it seemed, ghosts, ghouls, witches and zombies turned up to join the party.

Autumn Walk After a week of very dreary weather, 44 adults and several children came along to stretch their legs on this sunny afternoon. As always, Caroline took us off on a walk through the woods, covering paths that were off the main track and new to many of us.

Build a bird box

Build a bird box OK, despite the freezing cold¸ the morning snow and the need to de-ice the site, the Bird Box event went ahead. And to our delight, a number of people turned out to make this a fun time for all concerned. We thought this event would appeal mostly to the younger element, but not so - the older set were equally keen. 6 boxes were made and taken home and a further 7 were made to be hung up in the Woods to replace some of our older stock.

Annual BBQ Once again, we were very fortunate with the weather for our BBQ this year, slotting nicely into a short break in the rainy week. Attendance was lower than usual due to a clash with the Olympics athletics finals which kept some of our regular supporters at home. However, everyone was in high spirits enjoying the food, drink and some superb musical entertainment provided by Pete Martin.

Summer fayreWe were so lucky this year. After weeks of unseasonal rain, the weather eased for us just for the day and we were able to go ahead with this key fundraising event, which this year took on a patriotic theme Many of you turned out to support us and were entertained with music, tractor rides, Punch & Judy and a wonderful display of dancing from pupils of the Laton Ash School of Dance.

Spring Walk The Spring walk was held on 15 April this year, a cool but pleasant Sunday afternoon. 17 people, some of them new to the Society, joined us for this guided walk led by Caroline Kempster. She pointed out much of the flora and fauna as well as providing anecdotal history of the Woods as we were gently guided over paths many of us had never ventured over before. Xmas/New Year lunch party Over 30 people attended our annual party. They were treated to canapes and fruit punch upon arrival. Lunch of shepherds pie, meat or vegetable lasagne, followed by a selection of desserts, then coffee and chocolate. Appetites seemed very well sated! Entertainment included a fun New Year Quiz, a raffle and a very amusing sing-along based around an animal theme.

Autumn Walk

Autumn Walk 3.00 pm Caroline Kempster led 26 people on this very pleasant afternoon's walk through the Woods. She pointed out many interesting trees and plants including some less known species such as the Chinese Foxglove tree with its large seed pods and beautiful leaves. We walked past a very ancient and impressive Beech which looks particularly dramatic at this time of year.

Annual BBQ 7.00 pm This year's BBQ was well supported and great fun for all. For the most part the weather was kind, although we did have the odd shower late on but certainly not enough to spoil enjoyment of the games, food and music. We introduced a bar for the first time this year and it proved very popular.

Commemorative Tree Planting

Commemorative Tree Planting Members of the Society Council and Events Committee planted a tree to mark the occasion of our golden jubilee year. The tree is a Canadian Maple called Princetown Gold which bears golden leaves. It is planted in the upper part of the Arboretum. An identifying plaque will be added later.

Summer Fayre 2.00 pm Despite the lack of sunshine and an unfortunate clash with a nearby school fete, we had a very successful Summer Fayre again this year with everyone having a lot of fun. Main attractions included our balloon magician and Punch & Judy show and a variety of games for the young and the young at heart to enjoy. The tractor rides proved particularly popular, with passengers enjoying a 15-20 minute journey around the woods.

Spring Walk

Spring Walk 3.00 pm 25 people joined us on Easter Sunday afternoon for a guided walk through the woods, ably led by our expert Caroline Kempster.  Although the unusually warm weather this April had meant that the bluebells were largely past their prime, there were still many flowers and fauna of interest.

Annual Barbecue

Annual Barbecue We were joined by musicians and a singer who entertained while hot dogs, burgers, bacon rolls and drinks were served. There was also a tombola, raffle and skittles. The working party later lit a small bonfire and this provided a most enjoyable opportunity for people to dance around it to the music. Great fun was had by all at this popular family event.

The discussion allowed members to express their views on the AGM report and to raise any issues or ideas they may have concerning the preservation of the woods. The evening was rounded off with cheese and wine refreshments

Moth evening

Moth evening This was led by expert Andy Phillips and proved to be a very interesting evening for everyone attending. Many different species were caught, studied and then released. People were surprised at the variety of colours and sizes of our local moths.

 

Golden Jubilee Fayre

Golden Jubilee FayreOpened on this very special occasion by popular comedienne Jo Brand, the summer fayre to mark our golden jubilee was a huge success with record numbers attending. Entertainment included stalls, competitions, music, games, Punch and Judy, face-painting, crafts and gymnastics. For this special occasion fresh strawberry cream teas were on the menu. It proved to be a great fun day out with something for everyone.
